Newbridge is a rural hamlet with surrounding countryside and woodland which remains untouched. The local walks are too many to mention so we will leave this adventure to the visitor. During the summer months 'The Orchards' campsite in Newbridge opens a fish and chip shop.
Calbourne, Shalfleet and Wellow are villages close to Newbridge.
You can enjoy a stroll along the famous and picturesque ‘Winkle Street’ in Calbourne much painted by artists in the last century. The Sun Inn is nearby, along with Calbourne Water Mill which can be reach on foot from Fields View.
The 11th century Shalfleet church, St Michael the Archangel, has a strong tower built to withstand pirates and invaders and is well worth a visit.
Opposite the church is the New Inn and a pleasant walk along to Shalfleet Quay. Shalfleet has a very useful village shop selling everyday essentials and locally produced food.
The family friendly Horse and Groom pub is along the main road towards Yarmouth.
From Fields View it is a short walk through the woods and along Dodpits Lane to Chessell Pottery, famed for its cakes and coffee.
West Wight Alpacas, which also has a cafe, is situated in the village of Wellow approximately 3 miles walk via footpaths.
Yarmouth
The historic town of Yarmouth is situated in the West of the Island, and is around 5 miles from Fields View. It is one of the main entry points for car and foot passengers from the mainland via Lymington. A serene ferry crossing of about 40 minutes.
Yarmouth has its own castle and a town square with traditional coaching house, pier, parish church and town hall and during the year hosts events such as The Annual Pancake Race, Bonfire Night procession and Christmas Carols.
Families may enjoy crabbing at the nearby river Yar bank and pier. Yarmouth Harbour is a magnet for sailors. During the summer months a variety of craft from many countries visit and there is an annual gathering of Old Gaffers’ yachts – 2024 dates not yet announced.
The bays of Freshwater, Totland, Colwell and Compton all have their unique charms and are not to be missed along with many other local attractions and beauty spots.
